governor jerry brown made a very rare appearance this week and told the regents that they were going to have to make some heroic moves to save money. students are upset and a little confused that california voters passed proposition 30 bringing in more tax dollars but they're facing the possibility of more tuition hikes. now, the regents are asking governor brown for about $276 million to keep tuition from going up next year. brown says that's just not realistic, that they need to get more grounded. looking for money-saving options and things like online courses. >> i'm going to try the best i can to keep tuition down and i'm going to try the best i can to get revenue from the state, but i do that in the context of a lot of other claims that people are making. >> reporter: the uc president says that quality has declined with recent deep cuts. he wants to boost spending by about $584 million. he wants the state to help with a funding increase of about $150 million plus $126 million in tuition buyout. funding in exchange for keeping tuition down. if not, he's saying that uc tuition cou

brown in san francisco today attending a meeting of the u.c. board of regents. this is his second straight day of board meetings. one thing not on that agenda, increased fee force students in professional degree programs. governor brown right now is asking the board to delay that issue to allow more time to look into the policies behind the idea. that request coming after the csu board of trustees decides to postpone a vote on a new undergraduate fee structure. governor brown attending yesterday's meeting in long beach and says that he agrees with the board's decision. he also discussed the passage of prop 30 saying it will greatly help public schools and universities but keep in mind that it will not fix everything. >>> 5:13. man on the run. john mcafee say he narrowly escaped the police dragnet in belize. he is wanted for questioning for the murder. >> we were discussing that yesterday. person of interest in his adopted homeland of belize. mcafee has been talked to a reporter and says he's changed his appearance and at one point dug a hole in the sand. crouched down inside with

brown. this guy deserves a medal. he denied public opinion polls. also, democratic candidates for state legislature. they managed to win a two-thirds majority in each house which will allow that party to govern without republican obstruction. here's the history of it. the last time the state had a democratic governor and democrats controlled two-thirds of the legislature was 1883. 1883. so this is really a moment for democrats. also state republicans like the national team who now find themselves with only -- it's amazing. 29% of the state's voters. 29%. you can't win elections when you count on basically a quarter of the public as your base. it just won't work. it won't work. this is even worse than national republican party. california republicans have to find a way to broaden their base if they hope to govern in the near future. >> we mentioned prop 30 briefly. safe to say that education was one of the winners at the local level had. >> absolutely. local schools which saw most of the parcel taxes pass, construction bond taxes pass, you mentioned proposition 30 all approved by voters.
